Renewing civil society

Article Abstract:

South Africa has made tremendous progress in its experiment with democratic rule. Nelson Mandela's election as the country's president in the 1994 elections and the end of apartheid have been cited as democracy's greatest accomplishments in South Africa. However, problems such as the lack of a permanent constitution, the uncertain nature of the electoral system and the degree of federalism need to be solved to stabilize democracy in South Africa. Much also remains to be done before it can be said that South Africa is really a democratic country.

What makes democracies endure?

Article Abstract:

Democracy can thrive in a country with an already-existing democratic regime and where people live comfortably. Other factors that make for an enduring democracy are economic growth with moderate inflation, declining gap between the rich and the poor, presence of parliamentary institutions and favorable relations with other countries. These factors point to the importance of economic development in a democracy based on parliamentary institutions.
