Anthrax in Western and Central African great apes

Article Abstract:

The number of great apes in Central Africa is dramatically declining and the populations are seriously threatened by diseases, mainly Ebola. However, results of a study show that the role of anthrax in great ape mortality might be underestimated, suggesting that risk identification, assessment, and management for the survival of the last great apes should be performed with an open mind, since various pathogens with distinct characteristics in epidemiology and pathogenicity might impact the populations.

Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes troglodytes) tool use in the Ngotto Forest, Central African Republic

Article Abstract:

A detailed description of the different types of chimpanzee tools is provided found during a 7-month survey of the Ngotto Forest to the south of the village of Grima and the tools with types found at other sites were compared. It was expected that the chimpanzees would construct stick tools of different lengths depending on whether they were using them for honey-probing or ant-dipping.

Article Abstract:

A new use of a tool-set by Pan troglodytes troglodytes to prey on Macrotermes muelleri, M. renouxi, M. lilljeborgi, and M. nobilis are recorded at the northern periphery of the Dja Biosphere Reserve in southeastern Cameroon. Sixty-eight percent of 138 chimpanzee fecal samples contained major soldiers of four Macrotermes species.
