Discrimination of temporal synchrony in intermodal events by children with autism and children with developmental disabilities without autism

Article Abstract:

Tthe intermodal perception of temporal synchrony in 16 young children (ages 4 to 6 years) with autism compared to a group of children without impairments matched on adaptive age and group of children with other developmental disabilities matched on chronological and adaptive age is examined. Several explanations are offered for autism-specific, language-specific pattern of responding to temporal synchrony, and potential developmental sequelae are discussed.

Development in infants with autism spectrum disorders: A prospective study

Article Abstract:

A study of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) was conducted to examine development, using the Mullen Scales of Early Learning (MSEL) in 87 infants tested at target ages 6, 14, and 24 months. The results indicated that variations from typical and language delayed development were detectable in many children with ASD using a measure of general development by 24 months of age, while unusual slowing in performance occurred between 14 and 24 months of age.

The prototype effect in recognition memory: Intact in autism?

Article Abstract:

A discussion presented focuses on key methodological differences between studies conducted by Klinger & Dawson, Plaisted, O'Riordan & Baron-Cohen, Frith, Frith & Happe and those that support the claim that central coherence, prototype formation, and common feature processing are impaired in autism. However, the studies fail to support predictions of impaired prototype effects in autism.
