Encouraging good deeds for those in need: the "Annual Moffic Award for Ethical Practice in Public Sector Managed Behavioral Healthcare."

Article Abstract:

The integration of community mental health practice and managed health care has not been successful in effectively addressing the prevailing issues in mental health care. A citizen, Dr. Stephen Moffic, has offered to make an annual cash award for ethical practice in public sector managed behavioral health care. Moffic should himself receive praise and recognition for his generous offer. It is to be hoped that his effort will encourage other creative initiatives to furnish better and kinder care for the mentally ill or incapacitated.

Can we bridge the gap between the actual lives of persons with serious mental disorders and the therapeutic goals of their providers?

Article Abstract:

Renowned psychologist and researcher Edward Mulvey has suggested that many psychiatric care providers are not in tune with the needs of their patients. Two measures are proposed to improve the delivery of services to people with mental disorders. One is changing the way clinicians are educated and prepared for the mental health setting. The other is formulating a policy facilitating the integration of informal care providers into the formal service delivery system.
