Hypothesis testing in a rule discovery problem: when a focused procedure is effective

Article Abstract:

Studies indicate that subjects do not solve original problems as easily or as quickly as counter-example versions of the original problems in hypothesis testing. Research involved hypothesis testing for two examples of the rule discovery problem, using numeric sequences as both representations and confirmations of rules and tracking subjects' revisions of their hypotheses.

Accessing source information in analogical problem-solving

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that both source information retrieval and source-target connection identification are required before a subject will apply source information to a target problem. Tests determined that failure to spontaneously apply information was not dependent on the subject's failure to activate the information.
