Realist errors in children's responses to pictures and words as representations

Article Abstract:

Some children aged three and four make realist mistakes about both the content of pictures and words and about operations carried out on the referents of these external representations. It appears that children of this age understand that a picture or a name which presents a real referent should indicate the referent's identity. They generally do not, or cannot, pay attention at the same time to the physical properties of the picture as an item in itself. It seems likely that the occurrence of realist updating errors could represent a significant stage in the development of understanding about representation.

Children's susceptibility to retroactive interference: the effects of age and degree of learning
