Smoking onset in adolescence: a person-centered analysis with time-varying predictors

Article Abstract:

A study to investigate factors that influence smoking onset in adolescents used a person-centered approach with time-varying covariates. The effects of age and contextual factors on initiation of smoking are discussed, and the implications for prevention research are outlined.

Peer and adolescent substance use among 6th-9th graders: latent growth analyses of influence versus selection mechanisms

Article Abstract:

Research on teenagers' peer influence is presented. The strongest peer influence during middle adolescence is the primary mechanism for tobacco, marijuana and alcohol, and is most effective in teenagers with difficult temperament and deviance-prone attitudes.

Prevalence and predictors of transitions in smoking behavior among college students

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to investigate the prevalence and predictors of transitions in the smoking behavior of 548 college students. Although results did not indicate strong predictors, interventions for tobacco control among college students are suggested.
