The failure to construct an MMPI-2-based self-mutilative behavior scale

Article Abstract:

People self-mutilate for many reasons and it may not be possible to establish global guidelines to distinguish those who engage in this behavior from those who do not. Comparing a group of 30 self-mutilating inpatients with 30 who were not identified as having this behavior found that a set of Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory variables cannot distinguish between the two groups. Other possible reasons for the study's failure to discern a difference are summarized.

Do coping styles influence the way we judge criminal offenses? A preliminary investigation

Article Abstract:

The judged severity of a crime is moderated when the judge's coping styles match the coping style of the criminal offender. An experiment involving 26 participants identified the coping style of each. Then vignettes of criminal acts were presented to the participants, who were asked to judge them. Coping styles such as problem solving, seeking social support or distancing oneself from a problem were evident in the vignettes and could be matched to the judge's coping style.

Maternal cigarette smoking during pregnancy and criminal/deviant behavior: A meta-analysis

Article Abstract:

A meta-analysis of the growing body of empirical literature is performed to systematically assess what the existing studies reveal regarding maternal cigarette smoking (MCS) as a criminogenic risk factor for offspring. Results show a statistically significant, yet rather small, overall mean 'effect size' of the relationship between MCS and the likelihood that children would engage in deviant/criminal behavior.
