The psychophysiology of self-mutilation

Article Abstract:

Analysis of 3 groups of self-mutilators for subjective and psychophysiological responses to imaged control actions shows a decline in response by self-mutilators during self-mutilation imagery but not for nonmutilators, who were unaffected. The three groupings of subjects were prisoner, prisoner control and non-prisoner control, and the imagery was categorized as neutral, accidental injury and aggression. A gap between psychological and psychophysiological response to the act of self-mutilation was apparent. The use of psychophysiological data may significantly improve clinical management of self-mutilative behaviors.

The ISRD Study - self-report findings from N. Ireland

Article Abstract:

The International Self Reported Delinquency (ISRD) Study carried out in Northern Ireland in 1992-93 shows that property and violent offences have a negative correlation with education. The offenses are more in the lower social strata. However, drug abuse is similar in all social strata. Individuals receiving welfare benefits commit crimes more than those that are financially supported by their parents. The results are similar in the 13 ISRD participant countries, though high drug use is more prevalent in Northern Europe and America.
