The therapeutic use of social disturbance in institutions: a sociological approach in practice

Article Abstract:

The therapeutic potention of the social disturbances which take place from time to time in psychiatric Adolescent Units can be maximised if a complete resolution of the disturbances is delayed. A delay in resolving disturbances can be used therapeutically until some clear change has taken place in social relationships. This approach does not mean prolonging the crisis itself, but prolonging the resolution and time in which the disturbance's results can be discussed in a therapeutic atmosphere. This approach is further discussed, and three case studies are examined.
