X-RiteColor Digital Swatchbook

Article Abstract:

X-Rite Inc's X-RiteColor Digital Swatchbook is a desktop spectrophotometer that increases the predictability and consistency of color in publications. The device measures color as spectral data, which does not change between devices. The lightwaves within the spectrum of human vision are measured as 16 color values and reported in the definition chosen by the user. The Digital Swatchbook is highly accurate and provides consistent results that are appropriate for most electronic publishing. The device is used by centering the target color below the electronic eye and lowering the device. The spectral information is displayed in a window on the Macintosh. A ColorCache color palette saves all measured colors in an EPS file. The X-RiteColor Digital Swatchbook requires a Macintosh with 2MB of RAM and 5MB of hard disk space. The list price is $1,095.

Article Abstract:

Publishing in-house necessitates having a printer that users can share for many types of jobs and with different types of computers. This printer should be compatible with industry-standard page-description languages such as H-P's PCL and Adobe PostScript. It must also support network connections and multiple hosts at the software and hardware level. A departmental printer is a versatile, high-volume, high-speed laser printer that effectively serves up to 25 people. Networks can serve more users, but it would not be effective for one printer to serve more than 25 users. Texas Instruments' microLaser XL Turbo laser printer is one of the smallest departmental printers, with a speed of 16 ppm and a monthly duty cycle of 25,000 pages.
