Directing the Scottish play

Article Abstract:

The new Scottish parliament must not take any actions which will stop institutional investment in property following devolution in May 1999. Property issues will be dealt with by the Scottish parliament rather than at the Westminster parliament in England. They will be able to determine business rates and have controlling powers over Scottish Enterprise companies and local councils. The new parliament may decide to bring in legislation to restrict foreign ownership of rural properties. They also will have to create a housing policy for Scotland.

Commons pursuit

Article Abstract:

A case heard in the British House of Lords found a piece of land which was used by the public could not be sold by its owner against the wishes of the people. Under the Commons Registration Act 1965 the public were able to register the land, Sunningwell Glebe, and therefore it could not be sold for redevelopment. Developers should be aware of the problems which may occur if they buy land which is used by the public. Landowners must either stop the public using the land or place notices around the land informing the public they may use the land.

English partnerships reclaiming Britain

Article Abstract:

British local authorities can obtain funds for derelict land reclamation from the British Government's Investment Fund. Approximately 94 million pounds sterling has been allocated for developments during 1995-1996 through the English Partnerships scheme. Reclamation projects are intended to replace areas of land containing unsafe and damaging materials with a clean and pleasant environment. Reclamation project funding is expected to decrease because of a change in funding structures.
