Article Abstract:

The German company Liebherr has found it very difficult to recruit a sufficent number of skilled workers in Sunderland, England due to local competition. The Liebherr company manufactures cranes and has an international workforce of around 15,000 people. Liebherr moved to Sunderland in 1988, it was attracted to the area because of its position near to the sea and funding from the local development agency. The workforce in Sunderland has increased to 160 employees and the company plans to diversify into alternative areas of production.

Article Abstract:

Wellstream are building a 30 million pounds sterling factory in Newcastle, England, to manufacture their flexible piping. Wellstream was started in the 1980s, it has 21% of the worldwide market for flexible piping and has a second plant in Panama City, Florida. Production in the new factory is planned to commence in Jan 1998 and the company hope to employ around 200 workers. Wellstream chose Newcastle because the development agency was able to offer some financial assistance as well as a greenfield site with suitable facilities.

Article Abstract:

LNP Plastics moved into a factory on the Teeside Industrial Estate situated in Stockton-on-Tees, England, in 1994, where it produces a light plastic material called Verton. The Dutch company LNP chose Stockton-on-Tees for a number of factors such as the availability of financial assistance, skilled labour in the vicinity of the factory and a building which could be easily customized. LNP pay 3.04 pounds sterling per sq ft in rent after their investment of 2.5 million pounds sterling to refit the building.
