Lands of opportunity

Article Abstract:

Developing derelict sites in the UK is an alternative to using greenfield sites which are becoming scarce. There are some 150,000 such sites in the UK covering 270 sq miles. Owners and local government are more enthusiastic about development on such sites than on greenfield sites. Some four fifths of this land poses few problems in terms of reclamation, though some 4% is useless for commercial purposes. Specialist investigation is needed to spot problems that could be costly later on.

Seeing into the future

Article Abstract:

Technological change will allow increasing numbers of office workers to work in smaller offices or at home. This will lead to reduced demand for large offices, in turn affecting surveyors and other real estate professionals. Similar processes are occuring in the retail industry with the development of home shopping by large retailers. Surveyors need to adapt to these new market conditions and some are putting money into databases and management systems.
