Outcry over Euro site designations

Article Abstract:

Key conservation targets may not be met if many sites in Scotland are designated under the European Habitats Directive, according to the Scottish Landowners' Federation. Designating too many sites will severely hamper management practices, and farmers and landowners will have very little room for manoeuvre. All the proposed sites are already Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), and it is hoped that they will continue to be managed on the same basis.

Agents escape blame for milk quota extravaganza

Article Abstract:

RICS guidance notes on milk quotas should be made stricter through cooperation between the Ministry of Agriculture, the RICS and the National Farmers' Union, according to the House of Commons Agriculture Committee, which has recently completed an investigation into milk quota trading. The report indicates that agents were not responsible for the sharp rise in quota values in 1994, but calls on the RICS to deal urgently with remaining difficulties.

Rent reviews climb on the back of prosperity

Article Abstract:

A rent inquiry covering 8,862 farms in England has revealed that rents on farms due for review in Oct 1993-Oct 1994 rose by 8.4% to 44.46 pounds sterling per acre. Farm rents appear to be continuing their upward trend, following a prolonged period during which landowners saw rents falling in real terms. Rent rises are mainly the result of successive increases in real total income from farming over the last few years.
