Quebec: Canada's only French province is celebrating its differences - and attracting new investment

Article Abstract:

Quebec's highly hospitable climate is attracting new investment with 1997 foreign investment reaching $2.8 bil, a 25% growth from that of 1996. The government is highly appreciated for its ability to help firms in the province compete and win in the global setting. Investors were attracted to Quebec's low corporate taxes, a highly trained workforce, government-funded assistance, availability of venture-capital firms, cheap energy sources, closeness to North America's key markets, and superb transportation network.

Aside from the language barrier, a lack of experience in international politics and economics is a problem businessmen encounter in foreign settings. Americans must recognize the differences in factors such as social formality, punctuality, and diplomacy across cultures.
