RDAs stir up the regions

Article Abstract:

Labour Advisor David Taylor insists that funding will be given to the areas of the UK which are in most need, with 200 million pounds sterling being used to pay the wages of the new nine regional development agencies (RDAs). Minister for the Regions Dick Caborn sees business as having a significant role to play in the RDAs, which will be responsible for transport, the environment and planning within their areas. Some observers are fearful the RDAs will not serve the public whilst others suggest they will need additional funding if they are to get the support of local councils.

An unholy row

Article Abstract:

The Durham, England, local authorities faced an attack from Former Conservative Environmental Secretary John Gummer over their plans to allow a 125,000 sq ft leisure centre in the city. He was also critical about the Prince Bishops Shopping Centre. The authorities countered the criticism by pointing out that the development has been approved by English Heritage and will provide much needed leisure facilities for the city and renovate a disused piece of land. Gummer called for a public inquiry which was not supported by the Labour government.

New Age or New York?

Article Abstract:

People who live in London, England, will be able to vote for the establishment of a Greater London Authority (GLA) on May 7, 1998. If the new strategic body is authorised, a new Mayor will be elected who will be one of the most powerful civil servants in the country. The chair of the Association of London Government, Toby Harris, believes that the GLA will give Londoners a focus for strategic planning, although others say that it will simply add another layer of bureaucracy to the city.
