Real estate's arduous '93 agenda: doing more with less

Article Abstract:

A survey of real estate departments shows that about 73% have a higher work load in 1993 as compared to 1988 with 41% saying that their departmental size is lower. Total quality management (TQM) programs, which may vary from one company to another, have also been regarded as having no significant effect on the performance of real estate departments. TQM prgrams usually include the concepts of goal setting, measurement, employee empowerment, teamwork, continuous improvement and focxus on customer satisfaction. About 40% of companies also reported that they have more unoccuppied facilities and 62% report that their real estate assets have declined since 1988.

Trammel Crow: radical changes spur a development legend's turn to services

Article Abstract:

Real estate developer Trammel Crow relates how his company has developed from the time that he founded it in 1948. His intuitive decision-making style, his attention to details and his confidence in his business partners have reaped benefits for the company and made seemingly unmarketable projects viable. His innovations have also influenced the course of the real estate industry and this is evident in Trammel Crow Co's shift to real estate services in these times of economic recession. His love for his work has kept him goingand he does not expect to slow down from his pace.

Consultants: look before you leap

Article Abstract:

The pervasive presence of real estate consultants warns companies to carefully assess them before hiring. The number of companies which are outsourcing to gain strategic benefits are growing, as evidenced by more than 30 US sites who have engaged in outsourced management. Given a difficult situation, real estate consultants are then advised to adopt skills that are excluded in core corporate competencies.
