Bangladesh in 1998: democracy on the ground

Article Abstract:

The year 1998 was a particularly difficult period for Bangladesh as natural disasters and violence conspired to threaten the country's democratic foundations. The floods that hit most parts of the country from July to September were the worst in years, as damages to lives, crops and property took a toll on the national economy. The political scene was marked by squabbles between the ruling and opposition parties, capped by the Bangladesh National Party's boycott of the Parliament. On the positive side, the government initiated measures to curb gender violence, reduce poverty and unemployment and stabilize local government.

The costs and benefits of Korean unification: alternate scenarios

Article Abstract:

The costs and benefits of the unification of North and South Korea are examined using a model that measures present discounted value of income with different scenarios surrounding the unification. There are two extreme scenarios that may happen, one that will maximize benefits for South Korea and one that will maximize benefits for the entire peninsula. Significant economic forces and policies that will shape the economic outcome of unification are discussed.
