Changing television news in Japan

Article Abstract:

The changing nature of the television news broadcasting industry in Japan between the 1960s and the mid-1980s was exemplified when commercial television stations emerged to challenge the dominance of NHK, the public broadcasting agency. Private television stations undermined the dominance of NHK by developing new content and style aimed at providing viewers more entertaining news programs. This growing market competition had significant political consequences that generated an information pluralism that reshaped the character of Japanese democracy.

Electronic pageantry and Japan's "symbolic emperor."

Article Abstract:

Television plays an important role in broadcasting events of national interest. However, extensive media coverage of political leaders diminish their stature. In Japan, for instance, emperor worship connotes a certain degree of 'invisibility' accorded to the monarchy. It is through such secrecy that the emperor gains an aura of awe and respect. Through constant media exposure, the trivializing nature of television destroys this aura and demystifies previously held beliefs regarding the monarchy.
