Indonesia's new political spectrum

Article Abstract:

Indonesia's plan of holding parliamentary elections in Jun 7, 1999, is paved with profound challenges. These include the Asian regional crisis, totally new rules that now govern Indonesian elections, a very tight time frame, an essentially altered national political environment, and allegations that one or two political parties are inciting unrest among Indonesians. An analysis of the country's major political parties is presented in a bid to uncover the underlying divisions in Indonesian society and to offer an impression of the civilian political landscape in the country that is likely to outlast the events that will follow the elections.

Catalyst for change in Indonesia: the Dili incident

Article Abstract:

The Dili incident, which occurred on Nov. 12, 1991 in East Timor and which claimed the lives of more than 100 people, led to the restructuring of the Indonesian Armed Forces (ABRI). ABRI leadership underwent a significant change, with the top positions filled by officers who graduated from the national military academy after 1965. ABRI has also improved its human rights record not only in East Timor but in other parts of Indonesia.

Indonesia in 1995: the struggle for power and policy

Article Abstract:

Indonesia enjoyed rapid economic growth and political stability in 1995. However, the East Timor issue continued to tarnish the country's international profile. The extent of the East Timor problem became more apparent when Australia rejected Indonesia's ambassador-designate. US-Indonesia relations, on the other hand, remained amicable in 1995, as indicated by Pres. Suharto's visit to the US.
