Laos in 1997: into ASEAN

Article Abstract:

The Lao People's Democratic Republic's formal affiliation with the Assn of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 1997 resulted to more rigorous social, political and economic preparations in meeting with the requirements of the ASEAN. Seminars were conducted to inform the country's officials about the implications of membership, as tourism and national identity were boosted to concretize the government's efforts. Moreover, Laos has been given a deadline on 2008 to lower its tariffs on most goods to below 5% to meet the ASEAN Free Trade Area Requirements.

Generals dominated the political scene in Laos in 1994 as they became visible in the Lao People's Democratic Republic's new solidarity-diplomacy and in the Lao People's Revolutionary Party. Relations with Vietnam, China, Mongolia, Myanmar and North Korea were strengthened by high-level exchanges. The year 1994 also witnessed increasing cooperation between the US and Laos, especially in efforts to locate prisoners of war and those missing in action.
