Pakistan in 1997: Nawaz Sharif's second chance to govern

Article Abstract:

The year 1997 was a high point in Pakistani politics, as the Pakistan Muslim League led by Nawaz Sharif trounced the Pakistan People's Party in the Feb 6 general elections. Nawaz Sharif received a fresh mandate, with his party getting almost two-thirds of National Assembly seats and three-fourths of the Punjab assembly. On the economic front, however, 1997 proved to be the poorest in Pakistan history. Nearly 7,000 industrial units were closed down while interest rate shot up to 20% as an offshoot of the recession. No outstanding developments were noted in Pakistan's foreign relations.

Pakistan in 1994: the politics of confrontation

Article Abstract:

Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party and rival Pakistan Muslim League (N) led by Nawaz Sharif engaged in bitter confrontational politics against each other in 1994. The two parties' intense political struggles resulted in near-anarchic conditions in some parts of the country. Stagnation characterized the economy at the micro level, although some improvements in the macro level were achieved. Moreover, foreign policy did not make any substantial progress during the year.

Pakistan in 1995: the continuing crises

Article Abstract:

Pakistan had to confront difficult challenges in 1995, including domestic political strife, economic recession, international terrorism and clashes in its eastern and western borders. PM Benazir Bhutto had to subscribe to patronage to secure loyalty and reward supporters. She also had to ease the tension in Karachi and improve relations with India and Afghanistan. US-Pakistan relations, on the other hand, remained amicable.
