Que reste-t-il de l'affaire Touvier? Memoire, histoire et justice

Article Abstract:

Paul Touvier, the only Frenchman to have been condemned for crimes against humanity, died in a prison hospital on July 17, 1996. Touvier was tried in 1994 in connection with his role in the Vichy government during World War II. The trial had real and potential moral, historical and legal consequences. Basically the case showed the French judicial process to be equitable and fair, despite its imperfections. Article text is in French.

La Memoire vive et convulsive: the Papon trial and France's passion for history

Article Abstract:

The Maurice Papon case is discussed, with a focus on France's relationship to history. The historical debate in connection with the trial, stemming from the Vichy period, is examined for what it reveals about France in the 1990s, including the dominance of Manichaeism and political dogma rather than careful historical analysis.
