Russia and China: the genesis of an Eastern Rapallo

Article Abstract:

Russia may likely continue efforts at achieving Sino-Soviet strategic rapprochement which it had started back in 1990. The decision to adopt a 'China-first' option as part of Russia's post-Cold War military policy has been motivated by geopolitical, rather than idealogical purposes. The move, which has been described as 'the Eastern Rapallo option,' allowed increased military cooperation between the two countries. Russia's military policy favoring China, however, has had serious consequences concerning the republic's relationship to other countries such as Taiwan and Japan.

China's security strategy: the view from Beijing, ASEAN, and Washington

Article Abstract:

China's security strategy is more complex than it seems and is hard to predict. Information about the Chinese government's long-term intentions and capabilities may have various implications. However, it is certain that the West can expect Chinese leaders to be more assertive and nationalistic and less conciliatory. In light of the unpredictability of China's security strategy, the international community should show China that it will not tolerate any aggressive behavior.

China and the disintegration of the Soviet Union

Article Abstract:

The collapse of the former Soviet Union meant a more prominent role for China in world affairs. Without China's cooperation, arms proliferation will continue to pose a threat to global security. Furthermore, the disintegration of the former Soviet republics spurred ambivalence in the Chinese leadership whether to concentrate on local issues or to become more active in regional affairs.
