Article Abstract:

The main character of Madame de Lafayette's novel 'La Princesse de Cleves' renounces the social system of her time but uses her retreat from society as a fuel for creation. Her control of her life is a self-reflexive process which has no need of any written description. Madame de Cleves is completely silent, not uttering dismay at women's place in her society or theorizing about the decline of the aristocracy. She retains her adulterous love for Nemours in her mind while rejecting him physically. The themes of subjectivity and society in this work foreshadow the 19th century French writers.

Grammaire a l'oeuvre: la creation d'un magazine litteraire

Article Abstract:

Creating their own literary magazine can be a good exercise for advanced French students. Such an experiment has been tried out for three years at Bard College and represents practical putting to use of linguistic knowledge. The magazine seems to motivate students.
