'Stranger within the Gates': knowing semi-colonial Siam as extraterritorials

Article Abstract:

The issue of Siam as a semi-feudal, semi-colonial social formation is set aside for its inability to provide a lineage for the strain of capitalist mode of production. The Siam's semi-colonial condition is examined from the angle of social relations between the westerners.

The establishment of the Zunjing, an academy of Old Text classical learning and spread of Han Learning in the nineteenth is explained. The scholars of modern Chinese intellectual history are interested in the influences of politics among Chinese literati.
