Thailand in 2004: The "crisis in the South"

Article Abstract:

News about Thailand in 2004 was dominated by the 'Crisis in the South' with daily assassinations of local police, soldiers, regions leaders, and other civilians that marked a level of insurgency in other regions of Southeast Asia also. While the recurrent violence represents a serious challenge to the nation, these events dominated the political picture in preparation for parliamentary elections scheduled for February 2005.

Cambodia in 2003: on the road to democratic consolidation

Article Abstract:

National elections in 2003 is considered to be an important step toward electoral democracy in Cambodia, however, the provisions of the constitution designed to force warring parties to join in forming a government now pose obstacles for developing stable, democratically elected government. Further, various factors affecting Cambodia's economic development are discussed.

Thailand in 2005: The struggle for democratic consolidation

Article Abstract:

Peaceful transition of administration through new elections and an elected majority government marked a significant step toward consolidation of democracy in Thailand. Continuing insurgency in the south covered an otherwise positive picture.
