The United Nations: Fifty years of challenges and triumphs

Article Abstract:

The need for global unity to nurture economic and social development is an increasingly significant part of the work of the UN, which celebrated its 50th year of existence in 1995. Finding peaceful solutions to political problems are only part of the body's numerous functions, and past and present international crises have clearly reflected its role and effectivity. The ambiguous global economic situation has placed most major economic issues before the UN in abeyance. The body itself appears to be in financial trouble.
