The political economy of Punjab: creating space for Sikh militancy

Article Abstract:

The struggle to create an independent Sikh state has always been the primary goal of the Akali Dal Party. However, irreconcilable differences, class conflict, regionalism and leadership competition spurred divisiveness within the party. Furthermore, the rise to prominence of Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale has created more tension within the organization. Divided and out of focus, members of the movement have resorted to violent means in order to gain independence. Unless the Akali Dal Party achieve unity, the widespread ethnic violence in Punjab will remain.

Changing patterns of Punjab politics in Pakistan: National Assembly election results, 1988 and 1993

Article Abstract:

The results of the National Assembly elections held in Pakistan in Oct. 1993 showed the country's transition to a two-party system. Although the Pakistan People's Party won majority of the National Assembly seats, strong support for the Pakistan Muslim League (PML) was also evident. PML garnered the votes in northern Punjab, in urban areas, of female voters, government employees and those living in middle- and upper-class neighborhoods.
