The transition of export-led growth in South Korea: 1954-1966

Article Abstract:

Two theories are volunteered with regard to the surge in the economic growth of South Korea between 1954-1966. The first attributes the growth to the enacted economic policies which focused on exports. The second proposes that government intervention in the economy, especially concerning international trade policies, was responsible for the phenomenal growth of the South Korean economy. It is also suggested that the private sector has a significant place in policy making.

Rediscovering Manchuria: Sin Ch'aeho and the politics of territorial history in Korea

Article Abstract:

The question of whether Korea's territorial boundaries in the early 1900s were limited to the peninsula or stretched to Manchuria was answered by historian Sin Ch'aeho. Sin focused on the 'minjok' (racially-defined nation), which resulted in the inclusion of northern areas of Manchuria in nationalist history. The implications of Sin's writing in the early twentieth century, and also after liberation in 1945, are discussed.

The politics of adulation: cinema and the production of politicians in South India

Article Abstract:

South Indian cinema has provided Indian politics with many politicians, particularly since the 1960s. These actor-turned politicians have the advantage of well defined images already projected in the minds of cinema audiences. Fan clubs also help in creating an image for the actors, simultaneously giving club members a chance to gain a political position.
