No longer an automatic ally

Article Abstract:

The relationship between Israel and the US is less cordial in the 90s following the election of Pres George Bush. The best years for US/Israeli accord was during the Reagan era. The Likud party headed by Yitzhak Shamir has a harsh policy towards Arabs which has jarred against the Bush administration.

Liberal euphoria may be premature

Article Abstract:

The Labour Party won the election in Jerusalem in Jun 1992 but the leader, Yitzhak Rabin, who is dedicated to Palestinian independence, needs strong support to overcome the opposition of the 120,000 settlers in the occupied territories. Israelis are more concerned with prosperity and consumerism whereas previously security was the most important matter. Peace negotiations proceed with the country more moderate.
