Alternative methods make their mark

Article Abstract:

Complementary therapies are becoming increasingly popular in the UK, especially among women. Indeed, complementary therapy is now offered by four out of 10 GPs, and is particularly popular for chronic conditions, such as insomnia and arthritis. Complementary therapy is mainly used by people who are disillusioned with conventional healthcare, especially those who have a condition for which there is no permanent cure. The most widely used complementary therapies are osteopathy, chiropractic, homoeopathy, acupuncture and herbal medicine.

The babies at risk from the blues

Article Abstract:

Standard clinical practice does not cover the diagnosis, prevention and management of antenatal depression. This means that very little is known about the impact of antenatal depression on foetuses. However, Dr Vivette Glover, head of the foetal and neonatal stress research unit at Queen Charlottes Hospital in London, England, believes that depression or anxiety in the mother-to-be can cause similar emotions in the foetus. Trauma in pregnancy may result in a child with more psychological problems.

Making alternative babies

Article Abstract:

When there is no physical reason for infertility couples try desperately to conceive. They keep records of temperature, take mineral and vitamin supplements, wear suitable clothing and moderate their behaviour. Sex becomes mechanical, never spontaneous. Some consult alternative practitioners and some try ridiculous activities in their desire for a baby. Often they eventually become pregnant but no reason is apparent.
