Apologising for history

Article Abstract:

There have been a number of examples in 1997 of governments apologizing for past events. The Czech government, for example, has expressed regret about the fact that Sudeten Germans were badly treated after the second world war, while the US government has apologized to blacks who were used in medical experiments. This apparent growing willingness to apologize raises a number of difficult issues. It is hard to determine the extent to which governments of today should be held responsible for events which took place a very long time ago. Furthermore, ordinary people cannot assess the level of sincerity which accompanies these apologies.

The respectable revolutionaries

Article Abstract:

The Liverpool, UK, jury in the case of four female Christian peace activists who struck a British military aircraft with hammers to disarm them because they believe British Aerospace is helping murder to be committed in East Timor, found them not guilty of conspiring to cause and causing criminal damage. The women, Angie Zelter, Joanna Wilson, Lotta Kornlid and Andrea Needham, intend to take out a private lawsuit against British Aerospace. According to the Catholic Institute of International Relations' Ian Linden, there is an obvious connection between peace and Christian feminism.

Gay marriages 'centuries old.'

Article Abstract:

Services of blessing for gay couples were common in early Christian times, according to research to be published soon. Many different liturgies for the blessing of homosexual relationships have been discovered, some as old as the eighth century. These liturgies are accepted by all experts as authentic, but there are many different interpretations of them, making their true meaning very unclear.
