Art dealers fight to save tarnished image

Article Abstract:

A number of senior employees at Sotheby's, the oldest and large auction house in the world, have been suspended following allegations in a Channel 4 television programme that they have been involved in smuggling Italian art treasures, to which strict legislation applies. Many art dealers are greatly concerned that the accusations will severely damage the industry's reputation at a time when auction houses are already under threat. They point out that the industry has already made considerable progress towards self-regulation.

Criminals home in on the booming new market in antiques: modern British junk

Article Abstract:

Criminals in the UK are now increasingly targeting 1960s and 1970s items which have hitherto been regarded as valueless. Certain items from these decades are now very popular, and this is encouraging burglars to seek them out. Demand for contemporary items has also attracted the attention of auction houses, some of which have responded by opening specialist departments.
