How Nato and the UN got into this mess

Article Abstract:

The Bosnian Serbs and the government of Serbia have shown themselves to be very good at exploiting that administrative and political divisions which exist between the estimated 37 countries involved in the conflict in former Yugoslavia. United Nations peacekeepers and the many mediators who have been involved in the war over the last few years have found it impossible to determine which authority has ultimate control over international intervention. Complicated lines of communication have hampered forces on the ground in their efforts to take prompt action.

American veto at UN infuriates Arab world

Article Abstract:

Many observers believe that the US move to block a United Nations Security Council resolution condemning Israel's decision to confiscate Arab land in Jerusalem will have a very negative impact on the Middle East peace process. The US has stated that it believes that Jerusalem should be settled only between Israel and the Arabs. In Europe, observers believe that the US is unwilling to express criticism of Israel because it wants to keep the Israeli Labour party in power.

US clarity eclipses Britain's caution

Article Abstract:

UK prime minister John Major's opening speech at the international conference on Bosnia contained mainly general statements, with the only specific issue mentioned being the need to deter any attack on the threatened enclave of Gorazde. In contrast, the US has made a series of very specific proposals to curb Bosnian Serb aggression. This follows criticism of the US for failing to handle the Bosnia crisis effectively.
