Barenboim's Berlin battle

Article Abstract:

Wagner's operas are anti-Semitic only to the extent that they were part of the atmosphere of their time, according to conductor and pianist Daniel Barenboim, who is conducting 'Tannhauser' at the Staatsoper in Berlin, Germany. He feels that it was obligatory to be at least slightly anti-Semitic in 19th century Germany, and emphasizes that he would not conduct a clearly anti-Semitic opera. He regards cultural nationalism as benign, rejecting a homogenized international sound in orchestral music.

Bach to the future?

Article Abstract:

Classical cellist Matthew Barley is very enthusiastic about linking with jazz pianist Nikki Yeoh to perform Bach, stating that he has wanted to undertake a project like this for a long time. He emphasizes that both he and Yeoh wished to avoid the jazzy versions of Bach which were performed in the 1970s. He feels that their pieces are designed so that they can set each other off. Yeoh feels that music must always have more to it than merely technique.
