Children press-ganged, raped and flogged

Article Abstract:

Evidence is emerging of children being treated extremely cruelly in Sudan. It is believed that many, mainly southern Christians, are being conscripted and taken to special desert camps, where they receive Islamic instruction and military training. There have also been cases of children being kidnapped from their villages and sold into slavery. Children have been particular victims of the country's civil war, which has claimed up to 1 million lives since 1983.

Children of the machete

Article Abstract:

Some 200 children under 14 where charged with crimes of genocide in Rwanda in 1994, and their future is unclear, as under Rwandan law they cannot be held criminally responsible. It is not certain whether they voluntarily participated in the killings which became commonplace in 1994, or whether they were forced to do so. To most observers, they are simply victims of a situation which is beyond their control.

Hungry children in a Nigerian slum, but life is 'not too bad.' (health work among the poorest people in Lagos, Nigeria)

Article Abstract:

The poorest residents of Lagos, Nigeria, live in extremely squalid conditions, but the population of the city's slum areas continues to grow as people come in from the countryside in search of work. Some mothers are forced into prostitution to fund their children's education, and many children are malnourished. However, health workers are now trying to improve living conditions.
