Article Abstract:

There is still a very wide gap between nationalists and the UK government about the future of Northern Ireland. This was highlighted recently in reactions to the Mitchell report on the decommissioning of paramilitary weapons. Little progress will now be made unless the Mitchell principles can be accepted by all parties. It is vital for talks to take place soon on the issue of a possible role for an electoral process.

Threats have no place in Ulster talks

Article Abstract:

Ordinary people in Northern Ireland have benefited greatly from the ceasefire, but they realise that a return to full-scale violence could happen quite quickly. The present peace is very uncertain, and there is still a long way to go before a full and permanent peace is achieved. The UK government is now calling on Sinn Fein to renounce violence and to promise to participate fully in peace talks.
