Does the system fail women - or did this woman simply fail?

Article Abstract:

The reforms that Cambridge University, England, has made to its promotion procedures are welcome, but do not go far enough, according to Gillian Evans, a lecturer in history and theology at the university. She has fought to gain promotion for herself, but has so far been unsuccessful, even though her academic work is widely respected. She is also fighting promotion cases on behalf of other academics through her involvement with the Council for Academic Freedom and Academic Standards. She is shortly to publish a book on accountability in higher education.

Cannabis on campus - repression is no answer

Article Abstract:

The use of cannabis is common among students at UK universities. Similarly, many students also use other illicit drugs. This places universities in a difficult position. They are expected to enforce the law against drugs, but also know that the law is widely flouted in UK society as a whole. They are also aware that there is growing pressure for the decriminalization of cannabis. It is possible that taking a tough stance against drug use by students will be counterproductive.
