Drink advertising 'inspires young to start taking drugs'

Article Abstract:

A report put together by the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs has revealed that youngsters are heavily influenced by advertisements they see for cigarettes and alcohol. As a result many of these youngsters may be encouraged to start taking illegal drugs. People are unaware that alcohol is a drug as much as any amphetamine, but proving that its abuse can lead to the taking of other illegal substances is difficult. The report particularly condemns alcopops - alcoholic soft drinks, and declares that advertisements for these products help encourage youngsters to drink. Many young people believe that illegal drugs and legal drugs like tobacco and alcohol are a part of the same culture. Preventative measures against drugs should be enforced in places frequented by youngsters. An approach to the advertising of drink and tobacco must also be undertaken.

UK: NEW PUBLIC TRANSPORT TARGETS UNVEILED

Article Abstract:

UK Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott, has unveiled the first national targets for public transport reliability and for reducing the age of the 76,000-strong UK bus fleet, a measure aimed at persuading motorists to abandon their cars. Under the new proposals, the average age of a bus fleet will be reduced from nine years to eight by autumn 2001, resulting in the purchase of 8,500 new vehicles a year. It has also been proposed that no more than 0.5% of services should be cancelled for reasons within the operator's control. The government will continue to offer bus companies rebates on fuel duty, in return for co-operation with the targets.

UK: GOVERNMENT CRACKDOWN ON DRINK DRIVING

Article Abstract:

The UK government intends to introduce a one-stop breath test, meaning that drivers could be charged with drink-driving without having to attend a police station. The Home Office revealed on 9 May 2000 that a breathalyser able to provide accurate readings that could be used in a magistrates' court is being developed. Less than 100,000 of the 800,000 road tests carried out per year in the UK go to court, while just 972 of the 15,000 or so drivers tested in England and Wales over Christmas 2000 were held on offences related to drink-driving. Legislation covering the changes could be brought in during 2001.
