Europe to expand its powers over takeovers

Article Abstract:

Draft proposals for a rise in the number of takeover and merger cases assessed by the European Commission rather than by national organisations will be issued by the end of 1995, according to Karel Van Miert, European Commission competition commissioner. He realises that he could encounter difficulties with expanding the role of the European Commission, as this will be seen by national governments as transferring sovereign rights to Brussels. However, he also plans to boost current procedures for referring Brussels merger cases back to national competition authorities.

Straight talker takes on airline barons

Article Abstract:

There is nothing wrong with mergers between large companies in theory, according to European Competition Commissioner Karel Van Miert. However, he is determined that large companies will respect the law, especially against a background of competition being squeezed out of several different markets. He admits that the pressure of a large number of complex cases is forcing the European Commission to prioritize, with some cases having to be put to one side. He is soon to rule on British Airways' alliance with American Airlines.

One day, you may have to switch your brain on

Article Abstract:

There are now many areas in which neural networks can be used, including health care and finance. They have the advantage of being able to 'think' like real brains, and are also able to generalise from examples. They do not require programs, as they are able to learn by trial and error. Some have applications in marketing, while others can even save lives.
