Overture and beginners for Mr Mandelson

Article Abstract:

Peter Mandelson is a United Kingdom politician who is concerned with the presentation of government policy. He is a character in the drama of UK politics, and this affects how he presents himself in public. He cannot go to see a play without being aware of the impact he has on the audience, and there is curiosity as to how he reacts to high points in the drama. He is unable to become fully engrossed in any activity carried out in public. This situation is described by Erving Goffman in his work 'The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life'.

The prime of Mr McKenzie

Article Abstract:

Television writer Jimmy McGovern used to be a teacher, and drew on this experience when writing Channel 4's 'Hearts and Minds,' which looks at the career of a young comprehensive teacher. The series amounts to a dramatic cross-examination which often looks critically at McGovern's own past. It conveys his belief that education can and should change lives, a belief which is put under pressure by the pettiness of most of the main character's colleagues.

Marriage of heaven and hell

Article Abstract:

Artists have traditionally shunned science, regarding it as cold and destructive. However, recent research has shown that poets in fact responded positively to science as a rich new source of language, and modern authors and artists now tend to demonstrate considerable knowledge of latest scientific developments. Art and science are now starting to draw closer together, although there are still differences of opinion about their essential identity.
