Fat cats, rogue traders and the holy grail

Article Abstract:

There have been a number of significant trends in business and economic life in the UK since 1994. These include efforts to achieve non-inflationary growth, the regulation of utilities, the changing status of mutually owned building societies and insurance companies and a large number of mergers. There are now serious threats to the world financial system, and the system will be put under great pressure when the next crash takes place. Financial markets are currently very cautious, as strong growth and low inflation could easily give way to a recession.

Don't count on a happy ending for markets

Article Abstract:

The possibility of deflation emerging in the next stage of the business cycle is having some unusual repercussions for investment returns. Life assurance companies are cutting guaranteed annual bonuses, and there is a shift towards yields on short-term investments being higher than those for long-term investments. It is possible that real rates of return will become higher for savers than they currently are or have generally been in the past, at least on bonds.

Ten years after Big Bang, little has changed

Article Abstract:

The reform of the London Stock Exchange which took place in Oct 1986 made the City of London a strong financial centre, overtaking New York in many respects. However, in some important respects the City has not really changed much at all since the reform, known as Big Bang. Deregulation has in fact enhanced its instinctive methods of operating, and short-termism and self-interest are still prevalent.
