Germany must embrace realism over wages

Article Abstract:

Head of the Federation of German Industry (BDI) Tyll Necker, 63, has to deal with increasing industrial action as a previously agreed wage rise of 26% was shelved. This was part of a four-year east/west wage equalisation agreement, but only 9% is offered because of the economic situation. Many companies have left employers' associations because they cannot afford to meet these wage increases. Western German unit wage costs increased four times as much as those of its competitors. The working week was reduced to 36 hours from Apr 01, 1993. Unemployment is expected to increase in 1993.

Recession ends Germany's golden era: bracing for leaner, meaner times ahead

Germany is in the worst economic crisis since World War II with 3.5 million people unemployed. This is partly attributed to reunification but the global recession has finally affected Germany. Businesses operate short working weeks, have big wage bills, inflexible working and management practices. Forecasting shows output falling. Germany becomes battleground in a gang war

Article Abstract:

Organised crime in Germany has escalated to 400 serious cases in 1991/1992. Over half of them involved foreigners. Joining with eastern Europe has created a huge market. In the first half of 1992 63,000 cars were stolen and 10,000 girls became prostitutes. There have been many brutal inter-gang murders. Gangs escape across borders as regulations vary from country to country. The regulations on police procedure should be changed.
