Gorilla trail that strayed into Africa's violent heart

Article Abstract:

Tourists are prepared to pay a great deal of money and endure harsh conditions to travel to see the very rare mountain gorillas of Uganda. However, it is now becoming clear that tourists who travel to the area known as the Impenetrable Forest place themselves at considerable personal risk because of the presence in neighbouring Congo of the defeated Hutus of Rwanda. The Hutu militia are aware that attacking tourists will seriously damage Uganda's economy, and three tourists were kidnapped in Aug 1998. A further 13 tourists have now been taken hostage.
