Honesty could be Brown's best election weapon

Article Abstract:

Shadow chancellor Gordon Brown sees determined to take a tough line in his economic policy, focusing on ensuring that no risks are taken with inflation, restricting public spending and making no borrowing apart from investment. It is likely that this stance will not be welcomed by the financial markets if the Labour party becomes the party of government. There will be a suspicion that growth forecasts have been manipulated and that the fiscal position will not see the promised improvements.

Keep the palaces, but stand for election

Article Abstract:

A Channel 4, television station, survey on the British people's attitude to the monarchy indicates that 50% now believe that the monarchy should be reformed, versus 34% prior to a debate on the future of the monarchy. There is no desire for the monarchy to be less glamorous, but those questioned believe that the monarchy needs to adapt to the present, and should be more accountable, and that the people should play a part in deciding who should become the king or queen.

You may call this election boring, but to American eyes it's impressive

Article Abstract:

Political debate in the run-up to the UK's 2001 general election is discussed. It is argued that the level of debate is much higher than is common in the US. Elections in the US become very divisive because of the focus on social issues such as race and religion.
