How good must you be?

Article Abstract:

Stella Faulkner has eight 'A' grades at GCSE and good predictions for her A-levels, yet was turned down by five universities. She wants to study English and chose Durham, Exeter, Nottingham, Oxford and York universities. English is oversubscribed, with 2,000 applications for 130 places at York. Students should be advised of the political rivalry between universities. The system could be changed so that institutions would not know to which other universities the student had applied.

Not my idea of good news

Article Abstract:

Television news workers should discuss the frequent complaint from viewers that broadcast news is predominantly bad. Good news is given low priority, so are removed whenever time is short. Examples of positive news items are given. Positive stories often receive a shorter report. A change could incorporate a specific item for encouraging development or the frivolous tailpiece. Journalists should adopt an equally serious appreciation of good and bad news stories.

A good solution to Midland's problems

Article Abstract:

The Bank of England has less control over ownership of UK banks since the 1987 Banking Act. The Hongkong & Shanghai Bank made a bid for the Midland Bank which seems sound but the Bank of England would previously have blocked any foreign interest in one of the big clearing banks. Hongkong moved its holding company to London and will invite the Bank of England to act as lead supervisor of worldwide operations.
