How to learn to love stock markets even when they crash

Article Abstract:

Stock markets crashed in late Oct 1997, but the price falls were mild compared with the falls seen in Oct 1987. The 1997 crash was widely expected and fund managers had been preparing for some time. Crashes can provide corrections and save worse crashes from occuring later. Financial markets are necessary and provide insurance. Markets can be used to hedge expsoure to foreign currencies to to save for retirement. Traders take risks and provide a service to those who benefit from financial markets.

Footsie joins global share surge to hit fresh heights

Article Abstract:

There has been a sharp rise in share prices across the world as a result of the general belief in financial markets that interest rates in Germany, the US and the UK are unlikely to rise in the immediate future. Share prices have also been boosted by plans for the merger of pharmaceuticals concerns SmithKline Beecham and Glaxo Wellcome. The FTSE-100 index rose to a record of 5,999, with a particular rise in the shares of pharmaceutical companies.

Share swings seem irrational, but try proving it

Article Abstract:

Economics professor Robert Hall's explanation for the extreme variations in share prices seen in the US stock market and some others in recent years is discussed. It is clear that it is wrong to merely dismiss the market as irrational.
