Andreotti cleared of plotting reporter's murder

Article Abstract:

A court in Perugia, Italy, has cleared former premier Giulio Andreotti of ordering the murder of investigative journalist Mino Pecorelli in 1979. The prosecution faced significant challenges, including the fact that the evidence was mainly based on the testimony of six mafiosi informers and could not readily be checked. Furthermore, Andreotti remains extremely influential in Italian society. He now presents himself as a respected elder statesman, and has been able to cast aside concerns about his part in abuses of political power.

If Pius XII was the first Nazi Pope, why does John Paul II want to turn him into a saint?

Article Abstract:

The Vatican aims to beatify Pius XII, who was Pope during the second world war. These plans have aroused controversy, and are being strongly opposed by those who allege that Pius XII was guilty of failing to condemn the Holocaust. The Israeli government has pleaded with the Vatican not to beatify Pius XII for at least 50 years out of respect to those who survived the Holocaust. Supporters of Pius XII believe that he kept silent about the Holocaust in order to be in a stronger position to secretly protect the Jews.
